First you need to start off with a black square
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0Bo-IYpIBm8_bjLa9fSRhDOotgT6WERUoCL87SzYxzRCCCTYbtpII2Jh_Sn0Ctr6VNqywkpmY2GAlqqd2x7YJIUXHc96fmHjLhF4ce1fqcUqE-68jbhtPqxgtDz_g7JyUKGF4X1j0WpqZ/s320/Picture+1.png)
The second step is to create a new layer and draw the basic shape of the flash with the brush tool using a golden color
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwvU1lnI9xdZjZeHZ5Sxw3pkCMtkEZm3igtvN90V-4nWYWZODnLGIeNFpFdbb6hv_6rbltbowKwX2JL3lQISP1qzcWIimcC_HvcJEboNONNop6Eo73JmozuiyGXWFxD7YGZXPb6WTAD5bs/s320/Picture+3.png)
Next you will use a lighter yellow color to draw the interior of the flash
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFC-bnifW2wVUNlLvpo5AzvZjTWNW-sDY3ex5hW6G0fCgHHQYpeGX0Zj_RmhAMcWmacGOCl4tT1aqeoi-5TafNFn18jIX6cpU0Ov09jqArQBsK9Gv5NvgC109ePHt6DqvhSgsAPXaU73nx/s320/Picture+4.png)
After doing that you will apply a gaussian blur. You will need to adjust it to a larger or smaller amount based on the size of your muzzle flash

![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWt0Ooer7LhF-08ZAeL4mAVjTGuFWZfOEl-0RhfCpp_O5zVkYFIhvw6lmRs-6UsprVmJWcCVN0zEzgA8TYsntlcRX8qhxDjiCYK70ud3gQNknC-7QqSZ_FF1OcAprGEwM3S-dloDD3Z7_s/s320/Picture+5.png)
Now use the smudge tool to make it look more realistic
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7dd-EaVJu89jg35Lw3BP8xtyv5Tk6ZB_Jz58f_Hl75PDmvyqzEZXkXKeZxC4KED2G-UBfSgf2_V23Qws9hNbsOHHlBO4LTV5ZxOe6YX7zn_YvrwqD_4fqmabfNuwmXA5hpeLf_rC1EJDW/s320/Picture+8.png)
Next you will need to go to Image>Adjustments>Brightness/Contrast and increase the brightness slightly
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2Fw5frm7DOupqu45z2RMoyTLrNRWTFuO0CS1H50sNQXXdYdyOE2jt0tNzEAgIn1sk0lGKS3j6UTEDhEc0zFiuSumhc8OQ1HjHjvhxXDCmGobf6an-esAOS-Ned0dCwvQQhbWTCK4dV5_q/s320/Picture+10.png)
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7KNSDQo2uCaNhond59cc-I6Zm8gvTNTbtsqv6UAjnJH0bdBaBvX9xr9RaIiyU9BIV19HZjOXz63ZBNtqJXL9JKvdlboUP5ep3wUYDt-EDTTcbQwJLjR1eMWZlmfJwoIdSOTNOsVkPZKHi/s320/Picture+11.png)
If you wish you may add a glow to the flash by using the layer styles (the little fx button at the bottom of the layers window) and choose outer glow
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkag6o_gdIDY9PJVFxnbPu3fqC8k3dVy0l9Dp5fVsW4fLF6c-wTG6v7peKeB4i2tNXu3CT-A7leiQX31vGQMksi1OEg40piLfsq5YRpOsLKiMii4XrdEp3YSdqOLhq4B0RCHEhhkGUsQj8/s320/Picture+12.png)
Now delete the background layer and save the flash as .png this will allow it to have a transparent background
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1lN-pnZyBsCLpGJjKhWil2wkKusfICpnxayE5z1RCS-T3Yib2DnghGI_P0JkFiJaWlLvQrcT2C0lYtVnKZuhbqhUxvv4K75S0Y8vsQwlO-zGghyphenhyphengslBavKRROienqFZG_xpjCcRbwKLas/s320/Picture+13.png)
You're finished! Just open the file and paste it into the picture that you wish to place the muzzle flash on and adjust accordingly
