Dramatic Gritty Effect

I am going to show you how to take a photo and add a dramatic and gritty effect to it.

I am starting off with this picture

1. First thing you will do is duplicate your original image by right clicking on the background layer and selecting "Duplicate Layer"
2. Next you will go to the menu and click on Filter>Other>High Pass

3. Now type in 5 in the pixels box
4. Now change the background layer blend to "Overlay"
5. Next duplicate your original background layer by right clicking again and choosing "Duplicate Layer"
6. Move this new layer to the top of the list of layers.
7. Go to menu bar and click Image>Adjustments>Desaturate
8. Now change the blend of this new layer to "Hard Light"
9. Now click the little arrow in the top right corner of the layer's box
10. Now flatten the image.
11. Now you have one layer again so duplicate this layer once more by right clicking and selecting "Duplicate Layer"
12. Now press Command-F on your keyboard and it will apply the same filter we used earlier on step 2.

13. Change the blending of this layer to "Overlay"
14. Now you flatten the image again.
then
15. Now click the "Create New Adjustment Layer" circle on the bottom of the layer's box and select "Curves"
16. Now make a point on the curve in the upper left hand corner.

And now the finished product!
