Step1: draw a line using the pen tool.
Step2: increase the stroke to desired width
Step3: go to Object > Path > Outline stroke
the line is now a shape.
notice there is no longer a stroke color, it has become a fill color.
you can now manipulate the stroke and fill colors to your liking.
