I was in 7th grade when Ten came out. Unfortunately, at that time you had a choice to make. The Chronic had also just came out and the Seattle Grunge and gangster rap eras were both fledglings. I hated Nirvana and thus really didn't ever like the other Grunge bands like Pearl Jam, STP, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, etc. I was more into hip hop.
To this day I despise grunge music, but as I get older I respect Eddie Vedder more and more. This song is IMO the quintessential ballad of the grunge era. Really, I don't think Pearl Jam belongs in this grouping, but they were from Seattle and came out at the same time, wearing flannel, as Nirvana so they were included. Pearl Jam to me was just a rock group. Eddie has continued to evolve while the rest never really amounted to anything beyond the original sound.
I always liked all types of music, my parents were kinda hippies so I grew up listening to classic rock. But in Jr. high there were a lot of clicks that I never fit in with so I had my own opinion of music. I loved the Chronic and Doggystyle but I still loved me some Pearl Jam. My friend and I used to wake up early Sunday mornings and get the newspapers ready for her paper route listening to Pearl Jam's Ten. It brings back a lot of memories. Black always was my fav though.
