Give Your Posters a Retro Comic Effect
.) Open the image you are wanting to use.
.) Go to IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>LEVELS. Now change the input levels to 60---1.00---220
.) Now we are going to give the image a grainy effect, so go to FILTERS>ARTISTIC>FILM GRAIN. In this situation, let's use GRAIN=4, HIGHLIGHT AREA=0, INTENSITY=10. You can try different levels of settings if you want.
.) Now duplicate the layer and name it "HALFTONE".
.) Next, we're going to apply a halftone pattern to give the image a comic book look. Go to FILTER>PIXELATE>COLOR HALFTONE. Set "Max Radius" to 4. Set "Blending Mode" to DARKEN in the layers palette.
.) Now for the comic elements; the fun part. Choose HALFTONE layer and set a STROKE LAYER STYLE of WIDTH=20px/ POSITION=Inside, and COLOR=#5ECE1.
.) Add a new layer named "Rectangles" and draw a small rectangle at the top left of the image. Give the new layer a STROKE of 3 pixels and paint it orange. Make another rectangle, a little larger than the first one, and place it in the lower right corner of the image. Give it a STROKE of 3 pixels and paint it white.
.) Now we're going to add a border to the image. Add a new layer above the "Rectangles" layer. Choose the RECTANGLE SELECTION TOOL from the TOOLS PALETTE. Make a selection from the top left (right inside the frame) to the bottom right border of the image.
.) Go to EDIT>STROKE, set WIDTH=4px, COLOR=black, LOCATION=center. Hit OK.
.) Now Deselect what's selected and Go to FILTER>BLUR>BLUR MORE. Then add a small distortion by going to FILTER>DISTORTION>RIPPLE (Amount=20%, Size Medium). Sharpen the stroke so it looks more like a hand-drawn border.
.) And there you have it! You can add whatever words you want in your caption boxes by using the TEXT TOOL. Enjoy!
