D2 Tutorial 4 Coffee Cup Tutorial

First we need to create the saucer.
Step 1. Create an ellipse like the one shown below.

Step 2. Give the ellipse a radial gradient and set the colors accordingly

It should look like this.
Step 3. Duplicate that ellipse, then change the color to white and send it to the bottom.

(I gave it a dark background to make it easier to see how it is placed)

Step 4. Duplicate the ellipse again but this time make it a dark grey color and place it accordingly.

Step 5. Create another ellipse and set the color slightly darker than the gradient layer. Place it in the middle of the saucer.

Step 6. Give the saucer a shadow by duplicating the dark grey ellipse and giving it a 10 pt blur.

looking good :)

Now that we have the saucer, we need the coffee cup.

Step 7. You are going to create the bottom shape of the cup using your pen tool then create the top shape( rim of cup) using the ellipse tool. Simple enough.

Step 8. Give the cup a 3 dimensional look by adding a radial gradient to the bottom shape of the cup as shown below.

Step 9. Duplicate the ellipse you made for the rim of the cup and give it a gradient just like the gradient used on the outside of the cup. Place it in the center like the image below.

Ok now we need some coffee in the cup to make it look more realistic.

Step 10.  Create an ellipse, change the color to a dark brown coffee color, size and place it so it sits in the middle of the cup.
Now for the tricky part.

Step 11. Duplicate the ellipse you made before the coffee ellipse.

Step 12. Select both the ellipse you just made and the coffee ellipse. Select Path > Intersection. This will make the coffee look like its sitting inside of the cup.

(You could add gradients to the coffee layer if you'd like to give it more detail.)

Step 13. For the handle, you can use the pen to to create it by hand. Dont worry, it's easy to make.
Step 14. Give it a linear gradient with the same colors used for the cup gradient.

Ok now for some decorative touches.

Step 15. To make some stripes to add to the cup, the easiest way is to create an ellipse and change the color to a dark blue. Then create another ellipse and change the color to any color you'd like. select both ellipses and select path > difference. Place it on the cup

Step 16. Duplicate the shape you made twice and place them as follows:

Step 17. Create a nice shine by creating the shape with the pen tool, changing the color to white and taking the opacity down to 50%.

Nice huh? Not done yet.

Step 18. For some steam create and ellipse that will be placed above the coffee. Take the opacity down to whatever you think looks good. Take the blur up to 10 pts.

Step 19. Lets make a nice swirl. Use the pen tool and create the shape, change the color to a light brown color, and take the opacity down until it looks like the image that follows.

Step 20. Place the coffee cup on the saucer and create a small shadow by creating an ellipse and placing it beneath the coffee cup, taking the opacity down, taking the blur up, and the color to a lighter grey.

 Yay pretty!
